The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for raising funds from donors at four, five and six figure levels working collaboratively with colleagues, management and volunteers, as well as seeking to uncover and pursue potential transformative gifts. The MGO is responsible for developing, managing, implementing and overseeing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors adhering to best practices in development and maintaining the highest ethical standards. They will work closely with major donors and prospects of WAMU; and will also work collaboratively with the WAMU development and membership department staff. The MGO will also assist the Senior Director of Development in managing relationships with a fundraising board as it is implemented, as well as relationships and strategic partnerships with American University’s development team. Input and oversight of Leadership Circle, 1961 Society and other donor cultivation and stewardship activities will also be central to the role along with using reporting metrics to track portfolio performance.
The position reports to the Senior Director of Development and takes prospect management guidance from the Assistant Director of Development
The MGO will be responsible for actively managing a 125 – 150 person portfolio of donors, prospects and lapses (including planned giving donors / prospects) at varying levels of cultivation to meet financial goals associated with the position
The MGO will work cooperatively with WAMU development staff as well as other WAMU colleagues. When appropriate, key WAMU editorial staff may be tapped for their vast knowledge of the community
The MGO must be able to work in a dynamic work environment that is undergoing significant change
Willingness to work some nights and weekend; travel may be required both within and outside the metropolitan Washington, DC area

Required Education and Experience
Minimum of three years of successful major giving experience
Successful track record in moving donors up the giving continuum required as well as competency in prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and donor relations
Ability to multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines
Must be highly organized and possess excellent interpersonal communication skills – both verbal and written – and be self- motivated, possess strong judgment and be able to work independently and as part of a team
Applicant must be creative, proactive, disciplined, and able to think strategically
The candidate must be computer literate and possess analytical and research skills
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, research web sites, and WAMU 88.5 programs is vital
Must be trustworthy and capable of handling confidential information with the utmost discretion
Preferred Education and Experience
Familiarity with Team Approach or Blackbaud database software
Extensive knowledge of the Washington, DC area philanthropic community essential, and experience in public broadcasting
