Administration (Barracks Row) Commensurate with Experience Exempt : Director of Development
Sasha Bruce Youthwork is the leading provider of homeless youth services in the DC region. Founded in 1974, Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) works to improve the lives of runaway, homeless, abused, and neglected youth and their families in the DC region. We achieve this by providing shelter, counseling, life skills training, and positive youth development activities to approximately 1,500 youth and 5,000 family members each year. With 45 years of experience meeting the growing needs of DC’s youth and families with innovative programs, SBY is committed to ending youth homelessness once and for all.
Sasha Bruce Youthwork seeks a motivated and dynamic professional to join its Development Team as Institutional Giving Manager. As part of the Development Department, the ideal candidate will be responsible for stewarding and growing our funding partnerships with government agencies, corporations, and foundations. This writing-intensive role also involves coordinating the internal systems that allow Sasha Bruce Youthwork to ensuring the timely development, submission, and management of government proposals, grants, and sponsorship proposals. We are looking for an exceptionally strong writer with a proven record of developing winning proposals, especially among government sector grantors including US HHS, CDC, and DC CFSA, DYRS, and DHS.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the grant preparation and submission process, including:
Working with the Executive Director, Director of Development, Finance, and Program Teams to familiarize him/herself with the organization’s programs, goals, and financial needs.
Analyze RFPs, prepare summaries for, and lead regular Funding Priority meetings with senior staff to discuss RFPs that are up for consideration
Lead the preparation and development of grant proposals, including all external and internal outreach and planning required and the drafting of the narrative, budget, and all attachments; ensure all internal and final deadlines are met and proposal components are being addressed by relevant staff, including development, finance, and program staff.
Coordinate external grant writers to ensure prompt and high-quality grant proposals.
Coordinate the submission of grant reports.
Assist in the development of Sasha Bruce’s annual fundraising goals and action plan to grow institutional giving.
Maintain the organization’s Grants Calendar to monitor application and reporting deadlines.
Maintain government, corporate, and foundation files in Salesforce.
Act as liaison between funders; cultivating meaningful relationships.
Attend outside training related to fundraising and grant development, programs and policies; and attend all internal meetings related to maximizing fundraising opportunities for Sasha Bruce Youthwork.
Develop a high level of expertise in programs and services of Sasha Bruce Youthwork.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 5 years of successful grant writing,
Familiarity with government and foundation policies, procedures and guidelines, and business principles governing grant preparation and submission,
Proven ability to cultivate consensus, multitask, and be flexible and responsive to quickly changing demands,
Proven experience conducting in-depth interviews with program staff or groups (on calls or in team settings) and synthesizing the information into meaningful feedback or prose,
Proven successful (demonstrable) experience in writing competitive proposals for at least one or more of federal funders focused on the agency’s target populations is required,
Detail oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work under stringent proposal submission deadlines,
Knowledge of runaway and homeless youth programming preferred,
Ability to write clearly and concisely, to structure arguments in a logical fashion and to balance technical rigor with simple explanations.
