We have an exciting full-time opportunity for a Manager, Foundation Relations to join the AAAS Office of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships (OPSP). At this critical time for science and society, philanthropists increasingly recognize the importance of AAAS’s work to advance science, engineering and innovation for the benefit of all people. Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer in our Washington, DC office, this individual will play a vital role in our continued philanthropic growth by identifying, cultivating, stewarding, and expanding relationships with foundations across the United States and internationally, as well as managing and contributing to AAAS-wide interactions with foundation partners and prospects to support AAAS, the Science family of journals, and our programs. In addition, as our primary development writer, this individual will generate compelling proposals, reports, web and newsletter content, and other critical fundraising materials for a broad range of activities and a diverse set of prospects and donors within and outside of the foundation portfolio.

What You’ll Do
Maintain a portfolio of current and prospective foundation partners. Develop appropriate cultivation strategies, including working with Board and other volunteers, AAAS CEO, the chief philanthropy officer, program directors, and other colleagues and complete a target number of discoveries, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship moves each year.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify fundraising priorities; solicit and close five-, six-, and seven-figure foundation gifts to advance priority programs; and support the fundraising efforts of program staff and AAAS leadership to achieve annual funding goals.
Proactively monitor and respond to evolving foundation funding opportunities.
Working in concert with OPSP and program staff, develop long- and short-form funding proposals, reports, collateral and other fundraising correspondence as well as content for aaas.org, AAAS newsletters, social media, etc.
Manage prospects, portfolio, and reports in Raiser’s Edge, including action tracking and financial analyses; provide regular reports on actions made.
Manage and coordinate AAAS-wide Proposal Review process.
Serve as manager of process to review emerging AAAS programmatic ideas and as staff coordinator of AAAS Concept Review Committee.
Serve as a central member of a cohesive and dynamic development team.
Impeccable written and oral communication skills
Three or more years of successful fundraising experience, including a demonstrated portfolio of proposal writing and other fundraising materials and, ideally, some frontline development work
Track record of soliciting and/or supporting the solicitation of foundation grants
Familiarity with fundraising best practices, standards, and ethics
Experience in a science, research, STEM, or science-related non-profit and/or with science and technology-based foundation funders preferred
Some graphic design experience a plus
Ability to work in a small team environment without extensive back-office support
Ability to thrive in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment
Ability to prioritize, multi-task, set and meet goals and deadlines
Understanding of, support for, and ability to compellingly communicate the mission of AAAS
Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge fundraising database a plus
Ability to travel occasionally (likely less than 10 percent time)
